The Grand Orient of Italy between Cagliari and Milan: the misunderstanding of “double standards”. A relaunch is possible, but only in full compliance with the Republican Constitution

On Sunday, July 24, Giornalia.com (an online platform for participatory and/or in-depth journalism) first presented the news that the President of the GOI of the Lombardy region had just been sentenced by the Masonic justice of the Grand Orient of Italy to the penalty of “solemn censure”. A penalty that includes a one-year suspension from Ritual Works and a three-year ban from membership offices.
From many quarters we wondered, and Giornalia.com picked up, if indeed the fault of lawyer Antonino Salsone had been that he had published, on one of his personal Facebook pages, a reflection that we would summarize as follows: “Excellent the confirmation to the Quirinal of President Mattarella a great gentleman, but if the parties have not been able to find among the sixty million Italians a successor to him, almost bringing a republican institution to the status of a monarchy, might it not be that the party system bears within itself a serious limitation?” – reflection that seems to us common sense and widely shared by the citizenry and the mass media of all orientations – but if that was fault how is it possible that instead the gratuitous insult so many times replicated, in Cagliari (in beautiful and pleasant Sardinia that boasts a two-century-old and dignified Masonic tradition), to the first magistrate of the Republic by such a “brother” with apex city offices, protected and sponsored by the same Grand Orator who had taken a severely critical stance on lawyer Antonino Salsone for much less, was not seen as fault?
From this fact, in itself inexplicable, let us even say from this incredible contradiction, then took off a sequence of events of considerable gravity, which we have recorded as ample and up-to-date information has reached us.
But let us go in order: in Salsone's defense at that point intervened prof. Claudio Bonvecchio, Deputy Grand Master of the GOI and a leading personality in Italian academic culture, contesting on the merits the decision to proceed with such a severe condemnation for what could resemble an illiberal (illiberal since it was fascist in nature) “crime of opinion”, moreover on matters pertinent to the activity of the jurist Salsone and in no way coinciding with the aims and purposes of the Grand Orient of Italy, understood as an “initiatory” community.
For this intervention of his, prof. Bonvecchio was in turn indicted through two Tables of Accusation: the first, dated March 15, concerned the voluntary and supportive sharing of the Facebook “cartoon” containing the reflection of Lawyer Salsone; with the second, dated July 29, he was reproached for supporting the accused Brother, since, summarizing as we understood it, in an “initiatory” society the Grand Master can decide to do whatever he wants without anyone being able to resent it. Thus, of course on the abstract level, conditioning Judges in order to pilot their work, trampling with impunity on the associational rights of members, throwing out whoever he wants at mere convenience.
This singular stance had in the meantime seen itself confirmed through a Circular issued by the Grand Secretary, which took as its diriment principle the inhibition of members of the Grand Orient of Italy from taking legal action before the “civil” judge, that is, the natural one, when they - precisely - felt that their associational rights had been affected.
But more: that even if they found themselves unjustly affected in their associational rights, finding for this justified solace in the justice of the Italian Republic, they would nevertheless be sanctioned by Masonic justice; for even the just protection of their rights would give rise to serious Masonic guilt.
All this, which would seem madness to the ordinary citizen – and we, a third and neutral party, confess ourselves at least surprised –, and “sophistry” to the logician (it is, in fact, a classic “petition of principle”), to the philosopher Bonvecchio instead seemed a dangerous illiberal slip within the largest Italian Masonic community, so much so that it prompted him to present a Table of Allegation against Grand Secretary Emanuele Melani, for violation of Articles 24 and 25 of the Italian Constitution. Table which, however, was immediately dismissed by the Central Court of the GOI for “manifest groundlessness” (without even addressing its merits), since the presenting Grand Secretary was, in fact, so it is said, a mere executor of political guidelines ascribable to the National Council, fully legitimized - again - to do as it pleases under the umbrella of the Grand Master, repository of Truth. The one, in capital letters, absolute.
It was to no avail that Prof. Bonvecchio had already written directly to the Grand Master of the GOI Stefano Bisi on July 20, imploring him to reconsider his paradoxical position.
This is the somewhat schematic but correct chronicle of the events of these days, events that are disconcerting not only the members of the Grand Orient of Italy, or many among them (anchored in a positive critical spirit) but also that certain segment of public opinion that, especially after the scandal of Licio Gelli's P2 Lodge, is very interested in what happens around and within national Freemasonry.
Meanwhile, we understand that Prof. Bonvecchio's official page - launched last November on the social platform Facebook - has been stormed by certificates of esteem from all over the national Masonic world. Which speaks volumes about an aspect that could prove crucial in the current clash: personal credibility.
Recording all that we have reported above, and remaining faithful to the constitution of the Republic, we young editors of Giornalia.com – none of whom is a member of a Masonic obedience, but also all of whom are respectful of the noble history of the Grand Orient of Italy from Garibaldi to Nathan, from Laj to Corona and Gaito, etc. – we follow the development of events. And we are also interested that on the painful affair in Cagliari so many times told, a word of truth is finally said.
Of truth in the lower case, of humble truth: that of facts. Because – and we can confidently declare it – on it Grand Master Stefano Bisi has publicly told “lies”. And a Grand Master worthy of the role cannot be a liar. (Of course, we have ample written documentation to confirm this).

Below is the text of the appeal of the Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Orient of Italy Claudio Bonvecchio to the Grand Master Stefano Bisi:
The undersigned, Prof. Dr. Claudio Bonvecchio, as a Freemason and Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Orient of Italy represents and denounces, in the exclusive and sovereign interest of the Communion, the very dangerous content of the attached circular 02/2022 issued on July 20, 2022 by the Grand Secretary on behalf of the GOI Council, which precludes any brother from taking legal action in the Ordinary Justice if he perceives the violation of his associative and subjective right. Preclusion this ce risks causing the GOI to be considered a foreign and independent apparatus with respect to the Italian State.
The prevalence of the domestic jurisdiction, even "regardless of the judicial outcome achieved" before the judicial authority of the Republic, on the state jurisdiction, places the Grand Orient of Italy in a superordinate position with respect to the Italian institutional context and is therefore not compatible either with the solemn promise, or with the prejudicial loyalty to the Republic, the Constitution and the rules that conform to it, nor finally with the Ancient Duties, namely "The Constitutions of the Free-Masons" of 1723 (III. Of the Superior and Subordinate Civil Magistrate).
Equally serious also appears to be the surreptitious introduction, by means of an administrative act issued by the Grand Secretary, moreover outside any competence reserved for him, of a sanctioning norm that by express reservation of law is the exclusive competence of the Grand Lodge (GOI) as the exclusive legislative body of the Order.
Such a declaration of conflict with the principles of our own Order and State Institutions, besides being seriously detrimental to the rights and interests of the members, cannot be shared in any way, on pain of concurring in such a completely subversive view.
Which is of an unprecedented. gravity, of a magnitude even greater than even certain deformations of the recent past of which the Institution still suffers the nefarious consequences.
In the spirit of mere service, I therefore request that the Grand Master immediately revoke the circular in question and bring the Grand Orient of Italy back within the framework of the Italian constitutional dictate.

La ragione di una scelta
Una autorevole fonte straniera, che al momento non siamo autorizzati a rivelare, ci ha chiesto nei giorni scorsi di “universalizzare” il nostro notiziario relativo alle note vicende massoniche del Grande Oriente d’Italia. Lo strumento più pratico è stato, naturalmente, quello di volgere in lingua inglese alcuni “stralci” dai nostri precedenti redazionali. Per Giornalia.com, che può contare su soli quattro redattori volontari e part-time, si tratta di una esperienza nuova, che consideriamo assai positiva.
Positiva tanto più in tempi di globalizzazione, dove ogni punto dell'universo è il centro dell’universo stesso: e, come sardi, noi godiamo di esserci fatti iniziatori, almeno per quanto riguarda l’informativa su una società transnazionale per eccellenza quale è la massoneria, di una divulgazione pienamente "circolare", accessibile anche a chi, fuori dell’Italia e/o senza confidenza con la nostra lingua italiana, sia interessato agli aggiornamenti del dibattito in corso nelle centrali massoniche di Roma, Milano e Cagliari, e di altre città ancora.

Domenica 24 luglio Giornalia.com (piattaforma on-line di giornalismo partecipativo e/o approfondimento giornalistico) presentava per prima la notizia che il Presidente del GOI della regione Lombardia era stato appena condannato dalla giustizia massonica del Grande Oriente d’Italia alla pena della “censura solenne”. Pena che prevede la sospensione di un anno dai Lavori rituali e l’interdizione per tre anni dalle cariche associative.
Da molte parti ci si è chiesto, e Giornalia ha raccolto, se davvero la colpa dell’avv. Antonino Salsone era stata quella di aver pubblicato, in una sua personale pagina Facebook, una riflessione che riassumeremmo così: “ottima la conferma al Quirinale del presidente Mattarella gran galantuomo, ma se i partiti non hanno saputo trovare fra i sessanta milioni di italiani un suo successore, quasi portando una istituzione repubblicana allo status di una monarchia, non sarà che il sistema partitico rechi in sé un limite grave?” – riflessione che ci pare di buon senso e largamente condivisa dalla cittadinanza e dai mass media di ogni orientamento –, ma se quella era colpa come è possibile che invece non sia stato visto come colpa l’insulto gratuito tante volte replicato, a Cagliari (nella bella e ridente Sardegna che vanta una bisecolare e dignitosa tradizione massonica), al primo magistrato della Repubblica da parte di un tale “fratello” con cariche cittadine apicali, protetto e sponsorizzato dallo stesso Grande Oratore che aveva preso posizione severamente critica sull’avv. Antonino Salsone per molto meno?
Da questo fatto, di per sé inspiegabile, diciamo pure da questa incredibile contraddizione, ha poi preso il via una sequela di avvenimenti di considerevole gravità, che noi abbiamo registrato per come ce ne è giunta ampia e aggiornata informativa.
Ma andiamo per ordine: a difesa di Salsone a quel punto interveniva il prof. Claudio Bonvecchio, Gran Maestro aggiunto del GOI e personalità di spicco della cultura accademica italiana, contestando nel merito la decisione di procedere ad una così severa condanna per quello che poteva assomigliare ad un illiberale (illiberale poiché di stampo fascista) “reato di opinione”, peraltro su materia pertinente l’attività del giureconsulto Salsone e per nulla coincidente con gli scopi e le finalità del Grande Oriente d’Italia, inteso come comunità “iniziatica”.
Per questo suo intervento, il prof. Bonvecchio veniva a sua volta incriminato attraverso due Tavole d’Accusa: la prima, del 15 marzo, ha riguardato la volontaria e solidale condivisione della “vignetta” Facebook contenente la riflessione dell’avv. Salsone; con la seconda, del 29 luglio, gli si è rimproverato il sostegno al Fratello imputato, in quanto, riassumendo per come l’abbiamo capita noi, in una società “iniziatica” il Gran Maestro può decidere di fare tutto quello che vuole senza che nessuno possa risentirsi. Quindi, naturalmente sul piano astratto, condizionare Giudici al fine di pilotarne l’operato, calpestare impunemente i diritti associativi degli aderenti, buttar fuori chi vuole a semplice convenienza.
Questa singolare presa di posizione si era nel frattempo veduta confermata attraverso una Circolare emanata dal Gran Segretario, la quale ha assunto come principio dirimente l’inibizione agli iscritti al Grande Oriente d’Italia di adire il giudice “civile”, vale a dire quello naturale, quando essi – appunto – si ritenessero colpiti nei propri diritti associativi.
Ma di più: che se anche essi si ritrovassero ingiustamente colpiti nei propri diritti associativi, trovando per questo giustificato conforto nella giustizia della Repubblica Italiana, essi comunque sarebbero sanzionati dalla giustizia massonica; in quanto anche la giusta tutela dei propri diritti darebbe luogo a colpa massonica grave.
Tutto ciò, che parrebbe follia al cittadino comune – e noi, parte terza e neutra, ci confessiamo almeno sorpresi –, e “sofisma” al logico (si tratta, di fatto, di una classica “petizione di principio”), al filosofo Bonvecchio è invece sembrato un pericoloso scivolone illiberale all’interno della più numerosa comunità massonica italiana, tanto da spingerlo a presentare una Tavola d’Accusa contro il Gran Segretario Emanuele Melani, per violazione degli articoli 24 e 25 della Costituzione Italiana. Tavola che però è stata immediatamente archiviata dalla Corte Centrale del GOI per “manifesta infondatezza” (senza che neppure se ne affrontasse il merito), poiché il Gran Segretario presentatore è stato, di fatto, così vien detto, mero esecutore di indirizzo politico ascrivibile alla Giunta Nazionale, pienamente legittimata – anche in questo caso – a fare un po’ come le pare sotto l’ombrello del Gran Maestro, depositario della Verità. Quella, in maiuscolo, assoluta.
A nulla è valso che il prof. Bonvecchio avesse già scritto direttamente al Gran Maestro del GOI Stefano Bisi in data 20 luglio, implorandolo di rivedere la propria paradossale posizione.
Questa la cronaca, un po’ schematica ma corretta, degli avvenimenti di questi giorni, avvenimenti che stanno sconcertando non solo gli iscritti al Grande Oriente d’Italia, o molti fra di loro (ancorati ad un positivo spirito critico) ma anche quella certa fascia di opinione pubblica che, soprattutto dopo lo scandalo della Loggia P2 di Licio Gelli, si interessa molto a ciò che avviene intorno e dentro alla massoneria nazionale.
Intanto, ci risulta che la pagina ufficiale del prof. Bonvecchio – varata a novembre scorso sulla piattaforma social Facebook – sia stata presa d’assalto da attestati di stima provenienti da tutto il mondo massonico nazionale. La qual cosa la dice lunga su un aspetto che potrebbe rivelarsi fondamentale nello scontro in atto: la credibilità personale.
Registrando tutto quanto abbiamo sopra riportato, e restando fedeli alla costituzione della Repubblica, noi giovani redattori di Giornalia.com – nessuno dei quali iscritto ad una obbedienza massonica, ma pure tutti rispettosi della nobile storia del Grande Oriente d’Italia da Garibaldi a Nathan, da Laj a Corona e Gaito, etc. – seguiamo lo sviluppo degli eventi. E siamo anche interessati a che sulla penosa vicenda cagliaritana tante volte trattata, si dica finalmente una parola di verità.
Di verità al minuscolo, di verità umile: quella dei fatti. Perché – e possiamo dichiararlo con tutta tranquillità – su di essi il Gran Maestro Bisi ha detto pubblicamente “bugie”. Ed un Gran Maestro degno del ruolo non può essere bugiardo. (Naturalmente abbiamo ampia documentazione scritta a conferma di quanto affermato).
